Public Records Inspection Request
Transparency and accountability are central to the mission of the State Treasurer’s Office. Treasurer Montoya and her staff are committed to full compliance with New Mexico’s Inspection of Public Records Act (IPRA), which guarantees members of the public the right to “the greatest possible information” about the affairs of their government. Through IPRA, every person has the right to request public records, either orally or in writing, and all government agencies must permit inspection and copying of records except as provided by law. Exceptions to disclosure vary widely, but include medical records, matters of opinion in personnel files, and trade secrets.
Procedures for Requesting Inspection
To request to inspect or copy public records from the State Treasurer’s Office, please send us a request in writing (through mail or e-mail) containing your name, address, and phone number, as well as a reasonably particular description of the records you are requesting. This description needs to be specific enough for our staff to identify the records you are requesting. Written requests should be sent to:
New Mexico State Treasurer’s Office
Victor Cornejo, Acting Records Custodian
P. O. Box 5135
Santa Fe, NM 87502-5135
Victor.Cornejo@sto.nm.gov
Upon receipt of a written request, the Records Custodian will contact the individual requesting the records within three business days to either respond to the request in full or confirm receipt and inform them of when we anticipate responding to the request. As required by IPRA, our Office will respond in full to a written request within fifteen calendar days unless the request is excessively broad or burdensome, in which case we will contact the individual requesting the records to inform them that we require additional time.
Procedures for Requesting Copies and Fees
If you are asking for a copy of a public record, we may charge a reasonable fee to cover our actual costs. For printed records, this fee is 25¢ per page for documents 11×17 inches or smaller, or 50¢ per page for larger documents. For records provided in electronic form, we may charge a reasonable fee consisting of our actual costs associated with downloading or transmitting the records to you, including the actual cost of any storage device. For all records transmitted through postal mail, we will charge the cost of postage. If copying fees apply to your request, we will require those fees to be paid in advance, before the copies are provided to you. A receipt will also be provided upon request.
